Verb Tenses

Dear pupil,

To understand verb tenses well, you should first read the following introduction carefully and thoroughly.

 

  Introduction:

What is a verb?

A verb is a word used in a sentence to describe an action, state, or occurrence, such as write, sleep, hear, become, seem, look, etc.

 

What is a tense?

A tense is a form of a verb that indicates the time and mode of the action.

However, we should know that a verb can have different forms dependant on the time and mode of the action. In other words, this means that an action can happen in different times and in different modes.

Time can be past, present or future.

Mode: It is the way in which a verb takes place or happens. A Mode can be simple, continuous, perfect or perfect continuous.


Now study the following drawings carefully: (We are going to use them in our lessons.)

Now you have known what a verb, a tense, a mode and time  are, and studied the drawings, you are ready to study the different verb tenses.
